If you have a Shorthand story you can use our Drupal Marketing Pages to embed your Shorthand story into our Drupal sites so that your Shorthand story has all of the UO branding and your site's navigation. These instructions are primarily intended for OregonNews publishers, but should also work for other users of Drupal and Shorthand.
Shorthand is currently only available to the UO's ten academic units. If your team is looking to use Shorthand, we do not have additional seats at this time. Other Shorthand questions may be directed Thuy Tran.
Requirements:
- Shorthand iFrame embed code for your story
- Ability to create marketing pages on your site
Steps:
- Create a new Marketing Page:
- At minimum you will need a title for the story.
- NOTE: At this point, it is recommended to also add your content to the "Teaser Content" section accordion area if you have the content. In the "Teaser Content" you should add:
- An image to the "image thumbnail"
- Any relevant tags
- A short summary (click the link at the top of the Body text box to enter text into the Summary's text box)
- NOTE: At this point, it is recommended to also add your content to the "Teaser Content" section accordion area if you have the content. In the "Teaser Content" you should add:
- Ensure the "Published" check box is not checked so the new Marketing Page remains Unpublished.
- Click save.
- Copy the URL of the new Marketing Page.
- At minimum you will need a title for the story.
- Go to your Shorthand story's editing page
- Click on the Settings button in the top editor menu (or click on the story name, just under the menu buttons at the top left of the page).
- Scroll down in the Setting panel and set the “Published URL” to the copied URL of the new Marketing Page you created in step one.
- Click on the Publish (or Republish, if the story has already been published) button:
- Click “Publish this story”
- Scroll down and click the “Copy Story Embed code” which will put the story's embed code in your clipboard. The copied code should be similar to below:
<script src="https://university-of-oregon-news.shorthandstories.com/[YOUR STORY NAME]/embed.js"></script>
- Go back to the Marketing Page you created in step 1 and click the Edit tab edit the Marketing Page.
- Scroll down to the first Envelope’s “Envelope content” area and click the “Source” button in the Drupal editor.
- Paste in the script code from the last part of step 2.
- Double check the additional "Teaser Content" information (if you didn’t add them in step 1).
- Preview the Marketing Page and if it looks good, click the "Published" checkbox.
- Save the page.
- Scroll down to the first Envelope’s “Envelope content” area and click the “Source” button in the Drupal editor.
Important Additional Drupal and Shorthand Information
The content within your embedded Shorthand stories are not searchable or visible to search engines or AI tools. This means that everyone must take a few steps to help ensure their story content is discoverable. Additionally, you may also need to change your Marketing Page envelope settings, depending on your story or site preferences.
Key fields and settings:
- Story headlines will use the Title field.
- Subheads will use the Summary field.
- The Body text box requires a plain text version of the story. This will ensure that the story text is discoverable and should match the text from the story. Copying the story text from a Word file will work.
- If you want your Shorthand story to be Full bleed on your Drupal site, change the envelope type to “Flush” or "Narrow" if you want a little bit of extra padding around the embedded story.
- Image, Category, Secondary Category, and Syndication tagging will be the same as with Articles or External Articles.
NOTE: The Marketing Page’s body field in the "Teaser Content" area, unlike on other content types, will not show up when viewing the story. However, this field is critical to have as it is where your site’s search will pull information from and snippets of this field will also be shown in the search results for all outside search engines.
